Keep Your Tax Dollars Local & Support Your Child’s School!
What is it?
The Innovative Educational Program (IEP) Tax Credit lets Montana taxpayers redirect part of their state income tax dollars directly to the public school district of their choice to support innovative educational programs — and get a dollar-for-dollar credit on their 2026 Montana taxes for the amount donated (up to $200,000).
When you donate through this program, you can:
✨ Directly benefit local students by funding programs like:
• Advanced learning & transformational opportunities
• Work-based learning partnerships
• Career certifications & post-secondary credit options
• Educational technology and adaptive tools
• Support services & equipment for students with disabilities
✨ Reduce your Montana state income tax dollar-for-dollar — your contribution isn’t just a donation; it cuts your state tax bill.
✨ Support innovative programs that might not otherwise get funded.
Decide how much to donate
You can donate up to $200,000 per year (per taxpayer).
Give directly to our school district by the deadline.
Cash or checks will be accepted. Early donations are encouraged.Â
Visit DONATION BY CHECK FORM to learn more and for instructions on submitting your donation.
Â
District pre-registers your donation with the state via the Education Donations Portal.
The Department of Revenue pre-approves your credit (as long as statewide credits remain).
You get a tax credit receipt with a confirmation number to include with your 2026 Montana tax return.
⚠️ Because credits are first-come, first-served until the statewide cap is reached, early donations are strongly encouraged!
đź“… Portal Opens: January 21, 2026 at 10 AM to record donations.
📅 School District Deadline: As a first come, first-served basis, early donations are encouraged — Our target is to receive donations by Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026 at 4 PM. Donations can be mailed to 2907 Roundup Road, Billings, Montana 59105
If the statewide limit is reached before your donation can be pre-approved, you won’t lose your money — you can choose to have your donation returned or apply it as a charitable deduction instead.
Contact your school district office — we’re happy to help you through the process!
